Engineered foods divorce flavor from nutrition. In nature, nutritionally dense foods are full of flavor.

What’s Hiding In Your Beer?

There is a long list of ingredients allowed in beer — like high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, stabilizers that are linked to intestinal inflammation, artificial colors, ingredients found in airplane deicing liquid, genetically modified ingredients, even fish swim bladders.

But, why are the ingredients not listed on the label? What’s really in beer? Which brands can we trust to avoid these additives?

Well.. it was super hard to figure out this information because the Treasury Department regulates beer — not the FDA — so beer manufacturers like Anheuser-Busch and Miller Coors don’t have to put the ingredients on the label — or on their website or tell us anything about the beer we are drinking and buying.

We know more about what’s in a bottle of Windex and Coca Cola than we do about one of the world’s most popular drinks — BEER!

This is a real problem in the beer industry that I feel needs to be corrected. And that’s why I’m petitioning the 2 largest beer manufacturers in America — Anheuser-Busch and Miller Coors — to post their ingredients online for all consumers to see.

I blogged about this last fall and it got people in an uproar! The blog went viral and so many people have been emailing and contacting me since to say they’re shocked and want to know what they can do to help. When I called and emailed these companies, they gave me the runaround about their ingredients — providing basic information but not the full story. I think this petition will allow one of these two companies to be the leader (or both) to really make a difference.

More Chlorophyll Please!

I started juicing raw vegetables more than 20 years ago. One  benefit of drinking raw vegetable juice is an abundant supply of the ‘miracle-molecule’ of chlorophyll.

Why is it, that a molecule found in the most abundant foods on the planet, that has so many benefits and is so safe, is only mentioned in studies that appear in 1940 and 1950? You have got to wonder if we live in a medical ‘Dark Ages’ where widespread knowledge from the past is ignored as if it doesn’t exist.

What Does The Term ‘Natural’ Mean On Food Labels?

“From a food science perspective, it is difficult to define a food product that is ‘natural’ because the food has probably been processed and is no longer the product of the earth. That said, FDA has not developed a definition for use of the term natural or its derivatives. Vani Hari, a food blogger known as the ‘Food Babe”, is a great example of the American spirit in action.

This courageous ‘Food Babe’ started a petition to get Subway to remove a chemical called azodicarbonamide from their bread recipe.

“In Australia and Europe the use of azodicarbonamide as a food additive is banned. In Singapore, use is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $450,000.” (source)
